Pink Rider
2003
acrylic on canvas
137 × 137
Acquired 2003

‘While eating in the brasserie, a friend of mine described Pink Rider as “a sugar hit”. Fair enough. I wanted the picture to seem elated and energetic with the horseman almost airborne. It’s odd to think it was based on Andrew Marvell’s Horatian Ode, in praise of the great Puritan, Oliver Cromwell. The painting seems to have veered dramatically away from its source and I’m glad it’s found its rightful home in the euphoric atmosphere of the club.
